How to use this tool
This is a deliberately simple speed test: it downloads a known-size file from a content-delivery network and measures how fast your connection actually pulled it. No login, no video, no 60-second wait — just the number you need.
Why a download test?
Most of what a home connection does is download — streaming, updates, files. Download speed is the figure that matters most day to day, and it's the one our download time calculator uses.
What to expect
- The result is your download speed in Mbps.
- It measures one direction; upload and latency need a different test.
- Results vary with the time of day and how many devices are on your network. Run it more than once if you're comparing plans.
A note on accuracy
This measures throughput from a single CDN edge, so it's a good ballpark, not a lab-grade figure. For a formal complaint to your ISP you'd want a more thorough tool, but for deciding whether to buy a larger plan or size a download, this is plenty.
Got your Mbps? Head over to the download time calculator and use it to work out how long that big file will actually take.
